Poverty: The Vice that Condemns Urban Slums Children to a Life Time of Misery.

A Community Education Lesson on Poverty :The Vice that Condemns Urban Slums Children to a Life Time of Misery.

Did you know that children born into poverty suffer a lower birth weight, higher infant mortality and poor health?

They are less likely to stay in school and will gain fewer qualifications.

The Effects of Poverty on a slums Childs’ Life :

Worse still, in adulthood, they will be paid lower, experience unemployment and are likely to die young.

Therefore, a slums child is condemned to a life of disease, hunger, unemployment, crime, child labor and early marriages from the day they are born because parental poverty largely leads to child poverty.

Poverty is a cycle which is hard to break.

Schools in Urban Slums achieve lower education targets because of the myriad challenges they face in material and human resources.

The effect of poverty goes beyond test results- poor children face a lot of adversity.

Some of the challenges that Urban Slums Children face at school and within their communities are:
a) Lack of school uniforms
b) Lack of notebooks, pens, pencils and textbooks
c) Lack of instructional materials
d) Lack of proper classrooms
e) Lack of classroom furniture
f) Lack of water
g) Lack of sanitation facilitates
h) Chronic staff shortages
i) Little or no support from a poor neighborhood
j) Acute shortage of finances
k) Hunger
l) Disease
m) Pollution
n) Insecurity
o) Immorality
p) Child labor
q) Exposure to drug abuse
r) Rape

Wide spread slum poverty affects both pupils performance and their school attendance.

Poor quality education leads to low income which in turn perpetuates poverty.

Low levels of education affect growth through low labor productivity.

The truth of the matter is that urban Slums children have been excluded from primary education because of poverty.

I speak from experience because I manage a Slums children learning center that I helped start in the year 2000.

The school is known as Wisdom Nest Primary School.

The students are exclusively from an Urban Slum and I can tell you that the children are suffering.

Poverty is a painful experience that no child should ever go through.

Children come to school hungry because there was no food at home the yester night.

They come to school sick because their parent can’t afford to take them to the hospital for treatment.

Others skip classes to go scavenge for food from street rubbish cans.

At Wisdom Nest we harbor this pain of dealing with children who had no meal last night or breakfast this morning. Children are sick but no money to pay for treatment at the local private health clinic.

Poverty is a cruel vice that condemns innocent children to a live of untold suffering which very few (of these children) will ever be able to escape in adulthood because of lack of proper and meaningful education.

Poverty condemns children to a life of walking barefoot wading through raw sewage along unclean and dusty slum streets in tattered cloths and running nose.
