About Wisdom Nest Primary School

Wisdom Nest Community Education Programme-WINCEP is a Kenyan self help organization duly registered under certificate number 12015 by the department of social services, Ministry of Culture and Social Services, as a not-for-profit organization.

WINCEP was started in 1998 by a group made up of slums women and a few men through a monthly merry-go-round meeting.

Why WINCEP Was started :

Slum dwellers live under pathetic poverty conditions. They have no access to credit facilities and this is the main reason that made us start a merry-go-round monthly meeting. Group members contribute money that would then be loaned to members.

It is from this monthly meeting that the group realized that there was another big problem facing them and the whole community generally.

Their children were not going to school due to poverty, lack of vacancies in public schools in well to do neighboring Estates for children from the slums, and lack of public schools in Soweto slums.

Wisdom Nest Primary School

To solve this problem the group decided to start a non-formal school project which they called Wisdom Nest Primary School.

Wisdom Nest Primary School is surrounded by a multitude of old brownish tin roofs in the slums of Soweto-Kayole Estate in Nairobi, Kenya.

The streets are littered with uncollected garbage, dusty, and unpaved. Raw sewage runs down the streets unperturbed by the desperate faces of poverty stricken residents.

Soweto slums area is an informal settlement mainly inhabited by people displaced from other slums of Nairobi, ethnic clashes in Rift Valley province and squatters settled here by the government of Kenya from an adjacent Army land.

In Soweto slums people are extremely poor, hungry, and living under pathetic and dehumanizing poverty conditions. Water and sanitation are sparsely available while garbage is never collected.

The education project has 400 needy pupils currently and is a full primary school.

Wisdom Nest Primary School is a success story having managed to send over 200 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education graduates, (students) to secondary schools in Kenya so far.

Wisdom Nest is giving hope amidst despair and hopelessness.
